One of the last assignments!

Lost Coastlines – Okkervil River

[Will Sheff]Packed and all eyes turned inNo one to see on the quay, no one waving for meJust the shoreline recedingTicket in my hand I'm thinking wish I didn't hand it in'cause who said sailing is fine?Leaving behind all the faces that I mightReplace if I tried on that long rideLooking deep inside but I don't want to look so deep inside yet[Jonathan Meiburg]Sit down, sit down on the prow to wave backThere might not be another stop further on the lineLook out, look out at each town that glides byAnd there's another crowd to drown in crying eyes[Will]And see how that light you love now just won't shineIt might just be another star that's high and far in some other skySo we sing, 'Is that marionette real enough yet to step off of that setTo decide what her dance might be doing?'Ruining the play, too, and in the ensuing melee escaping.Packed up all of our bags, the ship's deck now sagsWith the weight of our tracks as we race beneath flags black and batteredRattling our swords in service of some fated foreign lords[Jonathan]We sail out on orders from him but we findThe maps he sent to us don't mention lost coastlinesAnd nothing we've actually seen has been mapped or outlinedAnd we don't recognize the names upon these signs[Will]And every night finds us rocking and rolling on waves wild and whiteWell we have lost our way, but nobody's gonna say it outright

Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash

I hear the train a comin'; it's rollin' 'round the bend,And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when.I'm stuck in Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on.But that train keeps on rollin' on down to San Antone. When I was just a baby, my mama told me, "Son,Always be a good boy; don't ever play with guns."But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry.I bet there's rich folks eatin' in a fancy dining car. They're probably drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars,But I know I had it comin', I know I can't be free,But those people keep on movin', and that's what tortures me.Well, if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine,I bet I'd move on over a little further down the line,Far from Folsom Prison, that's where I want to stay,And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away.

Assignment – Song Research
Read through the songs. What do they mean? What are the songs talking about? What feelings are invoked by the songs? What can you relate these songs to? What other songs do you know by these people to truly give you a sense of the artists’ point-of-view? What references do you get within the songs that “take us to another place”?

Write a short analysis of each song. Dissect each line to do this.
Look up the other references on the internet and submit another analysis of that.

Due Tuesday at the start of class.

Peer Editing/Proofreading

Now that you are completed* with your Maya Paper, you will need to have other students proofread it. Pair together and read each others' papers. Please, be honest with your evaluation - it will be graded, too.

Each student should have 2 other people (in 12th grade) edit their papers. If you would like other people to do so, that is fine. You just need 2 others from 12th grade.

*If you are not finished with your paper today, you will need to finish it up and get it edited. Everything is due Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 5pm (you will have class time to edit if necessary)
